Today we would like to introduce you to Ms. Jamie Donnelly, the Director of Nursing of our Practical Nurse program at the Saginaw campus.
We recently caught up with her for a Q&A style interview in hopes of learning about her professional background and more about the Practical Nurse program in Saginaw. Here is what she had to tell us:
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about your background?
A: “I graduated from St. Clair Community College with my LPN in 2009, Davenport University with my BSN in 2013 and Loyola University New Orleans with my MSN in 2017. My background is in psychiatric nursing and education. I have worked at the Caro Center (state psychiatric), Saginaw County Jail and for the Michigan Department of Corrections. I have also taught mental health clinical at SVSU.”
Q: Why did you decide to pursue a career in nursing?
A: “I chose nursing because my mom was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2005 and watching how caring and how much compassion the nurses had for her and our family during that time was just amazing. It made me want to make that difference in others’ lives.”
Q: What advice would you give to students who want to become an LPN?
A: “Go for it, you will not regret it. Becoming a nurse is the one of the most rewarding jobs you will ever have.”
Q: Tell us a little bit about your role as the Director of Nursing at the Dorsey Schools Saginaw campus.
A: “As the Director of Nursing for the Saginaw Campus I am directly responsible for the operation of a successful Practical Nurse program. This includes ensuring the fulfillment of educational goals and objectives. I encourage and support the students and faculty throughout this journey as well as hold them accountable for their decisions. I am an advocate for the students when needed as well as a listening ear. As the Director of Nursing I encourage the students to go above and beyond and to give it their all.”
Q: What are some of the best things about the Practical Nurse program at Dorsey Schools?
A: “Dorsey offers an accelerated program with amazing and caring staff that are always there to support and encourage you through this journey. Dorsey offers all the tools and materials you need to be successful in the program and after. You will get a quality education.”
Q: What topics will students be exposed to in the Practical Nurse program at Dorsey Schools?
A: “While in the Practical Nurse program you can learn the nursing process and how the body functions. You can learn about the many different body systems and how they function. You will be exposed to hands on learning as well as lecture. During the program you will become familiar with patient care while in the clinical setting.”
