Step 1: Enroll in a paramedic program

The first step to become a paramedic is to enroll in a state-approved paramedic program. In order to enroll you must have a high school diploma or equivalent, some schools may require additional prerequisites such as immunization records. To enroll in a paramedic program, you should already be a licensed EMT or at a minimum, completed EMT training.

Step 2: Successfully complete classroom instruction and clinical training

The next step is successfully completing a training program. Most programs are 1 to 2 years in length and generally include both classroom and clinical training. The classroom portion of your education will likely include topics such as anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, pharmacology, patient assessment, cardiovascular care and ventilation techniques, among many others. The clinical portion of your training consists of hands-on experience and gives you in depth experiences to help prepare you for your new career. 

Step 3: Take a certification exam and become a licensed paramedic!

Lastly, once you have successfully completed the required education and training, you are ready to  pursue the NREMT certification exam. In order to gain this credential, you must complete an approved program and pass the certification exam. (1) Upon successful completion of the exam and meeting other requirements set forth by the state, you can become a licensed paramedic.

Being a paramedic can require a commitment to ongoing learning to stay up to date with medical advancements. Throughout your career it can be beneficial, and in some cases, required to maintain licensure, to stay involved in continuing education.
