Dorsey College Donates Oral Health Kits to Woodhaven Schools during National Children’s Dental Health Month
February is National Children’s Dental Health Awareness month. First observed as a one-day event in Cleveland, Ohio in 1941, the American Dental Association held its first observance of Children’s Dental Health Day in 1949 and in 1981 it became the month-long observance that we know today as National Children’s Dental Health Awareness month. Each February, the ADA sets out to raise awareness of not only the importance of oral health, but also helping children develop good, healthy habits when it comes to caring for their teeth and gums. The goal is to get children engaged at an early age to put them on a path towards a lifetime of good oral health.
In support of the mission set forth for National Children’s Dental Health Awareness Month, the Dorsey College Woodhaven campus recently donated oral health kits to two Woodhaven schools so they may be distributed to local students. 72 oral health kits were donated to Erving Elementary School in Woodhaven and were then distributed to students by school officials. Over 140 kits were also donated to Woodhaven High School for distribution to their students. The Dorsey College Woodhaven campus offers training for students to pursue a variety of career paths, including becoming a Dental Assistant. “Here at Dorsey College, we are always looking for ways to give back in our local communities, commented John Barnes, President and CEO of Dorsey College. “We know firsthand the value and importance of maintaining good health and that includes good oral health. I’m proud of our Dental Assistant students and staff at our Woodhaven campus for giving back in this way during National Children’s Dental Health Awareness Month.” In addition to Dental Assistant training, the Dorsey College Woodhaven campus also offers other training programs such as Medical Assistant, Medical Administration and Billing, Pharmacy Technician, Practical Nurse, Emergency Medical Technician, and Paramedic. The Dorsey College Woodhaven campus serves those living in the various downriver communities as well as residents of Monroe County. The school is located at 19810 West Road in Woodhaven, which is at the northeast corner of West and Allen Roads.
Dorsey College was founded in 1934 as the “Calculating and Secretarial Institute” and later renamed “The Dorsey School” by its owner, Ruth Dorsey. Over the years, The Dorsey School became Dorsey Schools, with various locations in Michigan offering quality career training and education. In 2021, Dorsey Schools became Dorsey College. Today, Dorsey College has campus locations throughout Michigan and offers comprehensive career training in the fields of healthcare, nursing, culinary arts, cosmetology, skilled trades, and emergency medical services. Dorsey College is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE). This applies to the Madison Heights campus (which serves as the main campus) and the Dearborn, Roseville, Saginaw, Woodhaven, and Wayne campuses (which are branch campus locations of Madison Heights).
