Paczki Day in Metro Detroit

Paczki Day in Metro Detroit Dorsey Culinary Academy 1 1

Tuesday February 9th is Paczki Day (or Fat Tuesday, as known by some).  In this edition of the Dorsey Dish, we wanted to give you the rundown on these calorie laden treats!

What is a Paczki Day?Paczki Day in Metro Detroit

A Paczki is a traditional Polish pastry that is defined simply as deep-fried pieces of flattened dough, stuffed with something sweet.  We don’t necessarily think this simple definition gives the Paczki justice though.  Think of a bigger version of a jelly donut, with more filling than a traditional donut as well.  In addition, Paczkis are often glazed or dusted in powdered sugar.

How do you pronounce Paczki?

According to Wikipedia, in English, Paczki is usually pronounced as PAWNCH-ki, however, some may also pronounce it as PUNCH-ki or PUUNCH-ki, and others may simply say, YUM!

What’s the significance of the Paczki and Hamtramck, MI?

As we noted, the Paczki is a Polish pastry, and the city of Hamtramck, MI has been known as a destination in the Metro Detroit area for Polish American life and culture and has had a large population of its residents being of Polish origin.

Where can I buy Paczkis?

It seems like wherever you turn these days, you can find a place to buy Paczkis on Fat Tuesday.  Donut shops like Tim Horton’s and Krispy Kreme usually carry Paczkis, as do many local grocery stores and bakeries.

If you want to go all out for Paczki Day, you may choose to drive over to Hamtramck, MI and buy Paczkis from one of their local bakeries that specialize in these Polish treats.  Bakeries such as New Palace Bakery specialize in Paczkis and customers are encouraged to pre-order, as it’s not uncommon to see lines out the doors and around the building well before dawn on Paczki Day.  An article from CBS Detroit last year also reported that New Martha Washington Bakery sells Paczkis year-round (just in case you miss out on Fat Tuesday or you have a craving any other day of the year!).

How many calories are in a Paczki?

WOW, well, this is going to depend on a number of factors including how your Paczki is cooked (those cooked in lard are going to rack up more calories), what type of filling does your Paczki contain, is your Paczki glazed, powdered, or have some other topping?  Some Paczkis have been known to weigh in at 400+ calories, while others have racked up over 700 calories, and some even report Paczkis have over 1200 calories!
